FishMan has a good video going over some different designs of air lifters, and then the swiss tropicals matten filter Air Lift they sell has ultra tiny holes, they claim to reduce biofilm build up(if the water cant flow back into the drilled holes due to air pressure, then biofilm cant develop, in theory) This was a great update Rumballs, thanks for sharing!

if you want flow volume a wider diamter pipe is better. If you want head lift the narrower pipe will be better. To reduce splash having the pipe elbow 50% above and below the water surface level will give optimal results as the air and water can separate somewhat before exiting.

This video simply tells me you don't know how to use a matten filter, you never remove a matten filter once you put it in. You vacuum the front surface of the matten filter if you must, while doing your water change, what you are trying to do is grow a living community within the sponge itself that eat the detritus. It also provides food for baby fish born in the tank. You are literally causing your own problem that you complain about, stop cleaning it, it isn't a sponge filter it is a biological filter, leave it alone and let your biologics develop and you won't need to clean the sponge wall. So many aquarists kill their tanks by trying to keep them spotless, ever see where fish live, it isn't spotless.

Great to have you back, I’ve just shut down the marine tank and swapping back to tropical fish again. Cost of living etc it’s a tough time for the hobby but still love the hobby

be easy on yourself mate..youve done a fantastic job, your a busy man between work family and fishroom your a machine mate! those deep tanks are not easy to clean imo. the deepest i like to keep is 24 inch max and even thats not ideal for me personally. glad to see you back mate hang in there, and keep on moving forward🙂👍
